The symbol ∞ is used in a place where a number would normally go, and so one might assume that ∞ is a special number like π (pi). But ∞ is different. ∞ is not a number.
What makes ∞ different is this: 'there is no number greater than infinity'. You can write the equation in many different ways, but here's one way: ∞ - 1 = ∞. If you subtract one from infinity, you still have infinity.
