The symbol ∞ is used in a place where a number would normally go, and so one might assume that ∞ is a special number like π (pi).  But ∞ is different.  ∞ is not a number.

What makes ∞ different is this: 'there is no number greater than infinity'. You can write down the formula in a lot of different ways, but here's one way: 1+∞ = ∞.  If you add one to infinity, you still have infinity.
