oil and glitter on wood panel, 40” x 40”, $2,120
This painting is a visual representation of Dr. Candace Pert’s scientific discovery of the opiate receptor in October 25, 1972. Her discovery fueled other scientists to find a natural opiate that fit the opiate receptor (lock and key analogy). The natural opiate, endorphin, is produced within an organism, tissue, or cell. Endorphins bind to the opiate receptors causing a myriad of changes in the cells.
In the painting, the lock and key analogy of the opiate receptor is represented by the opposing stigmatic disks of the opium poppy seed pod. The colorful, flowing section on the right represent the pain relief and euphoria endorphins (natural opiates) have on the body. Endorphins, along with serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine form the biological process known as the reward pathway.
