This painting is the prequel to ‘shut out 2.' Each circle represents the visual field of the outside world from the perspective of a person experiencing a retinal detachment.
Circle 1 - full vision with floaters
Circle 2 - the small gray disk is the area in which the retina begins detaching
Circle 3 - the area of the detaching retina is expanding as represented by the gray area
Circle 4 - a small portion of a beautiful sunset is all that is seen when the retina is three
quarters detached. The black area feels heavy, like lead, and dead.
