This painting was commissioned for a registered nurse graduating with a CRNA [certified registered nurse anesthetist].
In the U.S., CRNA is an advanced practice registered nurse [APRN] who has a master's degree and board certification in the specialty of anesthesia. Interestingly, nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care in the United States for close to 150 years. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, nurse anesthetists are the oldest nurse specialty group in the United States.
